Descendants of explorer campaign to retrieve paintings from Zimbabwe
Descendants of an African explorer has joined a campaign to retrieve his paintings from Zimbabwe, after they were sent "on loan" in 1947 but never returned.
John Youngman, 85, is supporting a request by West Norfolk mayor Zipha Christopher to recover artwork produced by his great-great-uncle Thomas Baines.
Around 40 items were sent on temporary loan in 1947 by King's Lynn Council to the government of Southern Rhodesia, now part of Zimbabwe, but have never been returned to Britain.
"I think it is going to be an almost impossible task to bring any of the paintings and sketches back here, but whilst there is still a chance, I can only hope."
Mr Christopher, who lived in Rhodesia as a child for a few years, is hoping to recover the paintings and sketches before her year as mayor concludes.
She said there would be national and international interest in the artwork and has asked National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies to help her in her quest.
But President Mugabe has blasted Britain repeatedly over the last few years and blames the former colonial ruler for the trouble-torn country's crises.
The original paintings of the world-famous natural wonder by Baines were the first to be produced by a white European man and sparked international interest in the late 19th century.
