Beautiful condition original skillfully produced Victorian tinted stone lithograph with accurate and picturesque detail from 1866, including the Dutch Reformed Church, the builidings of Adderley Street, an omnibus, carts etc. Table Mountain with its tablecloth is also featured. Print is fresh and bright, attractvie.
Thomas Bowler, the most famous Victorian South African artist, painted a large number of scenes of Cape Town, where he was an artist and art teacher, and the best of these were engraved.
This particular one appeared in a publication by Juta in 1866 entitled "Pictorial Album of Cape Town.."".
You can tell this is the original Victoriantinted stone lithograph and not a later copy because of the fantastic fine detail and the irregular and non geometric stipple effect caused by the stone used. There are no signs of later modern lithography and the paper used is the original.
Frame is 46.5 x 38 cm and engraving is 30 x 21 cm.
