On 11 October 1899 when the war between Britain and the Boer republics commenced, Christiaan de Wet was a common burgher in the ranks of the Heilbron Commando. When the war ended three years later he held the rank of Vecht-Generaal (fighting general). He had established a worldwide reputation as a most remarkable guerilla fighter. He was the man the British couldnt catch.

The damage this virtually unschooled farmer whod never had a formal lesson in military tactics did was nothing less than astonishing.
