True first edition with printed cardboard covers, being an account of the author's trip with Sir Randolph Churchill through Bechuanaland and Mashonaland at the behest of Alfred Beit; his letters describing the journey, first printed in the Cape Argus and Johannesburg Star, were to be collected into this volume. The first book to be published on the Rand! It was printed by the Argus Co. in Johannesburg in 1892 and as Fitzpatrick could not pay the printing bill, copies of the book remained in the printer's warehouse where many were eventually destroyed. 64 pages. Very good condition for its age. Size is 235mm x 135mm. Book plates to the front end papers, as pictured, naming this copy to H. W. (Herbert William) Garbutt, an early 20th-century resident of Bulawayo in Southern Rhodesia. He was a prominent local figure who served as the Secretary of the Rhodesia Scientific Association and a key contributor to the British Museum, providing significant ethnographic and archaeological collections from the region.
