Tibouchina is a genus of about 350 species of neotropical plants in the family Melastomataceae. They are trees, shrubs or sub-shrubs growing from a half meter in height up to 25 meters and are known as glory bushes or glory trees. They are native to the rain forests of Mexico, the Caribbean, and South America, especially Brazil.

Tibouchina urvilleana or Princess Flower as it is commonly known grows wild in the tropical rain forests of Brazil and it is a truly spectacular plant when in full bloom, bearing magnificent, saucer-shaped purple flowers with an iridescent sheen which are set off to perfection by the velvety foliage. The flowers are about 10cm across, and grow in small clusters at the ends of the branches. The plant grows as a large, woody shrub with long, hanging stems. Large specimens can be trained on a trellis or against a wall. Princess Flower can grow to a height of 3m in the wild, but cultivated plants are much smaller, about 120-180cm. The mid-green leaves are quite distinctive. They are about 5-8cm in length, oval and with a velvety appearance. Each leaf also has prominent pale green veins curving from the base to the tip and a finely toothed edge. Princess Flower has a slow to medium growth rate. Tibouchina urvilleana is also well suited to being grown in pots.
