The Tilley company started work with paraffin (aka kerosene) lamps in World War I and in 1915 was located in Hendon, England. In the 1920's, the company diversified in to domestic lamps and expanded rapidly after orders came in from railroad companies. Tilley lanterns were used extensively in World War II, and in their popularity, became a generic name for kerosene lamp.
