Time Crisis 4 brings the arcade light-gun experience into the home with fast-paced shooting, screen-clearing action, and the iconic foot-pedal cover system. On PS3, the game includes both the traditional arcade mode and an expanded story-driven campaign, offering more content than its arcade counterpart. However, the experience depends heavily on whether you play with the GunCon 3 controller, as standard controller aiming is far less satisfying.
The core gameplay remains classic Time Crisis:
Enemies appear in waves
You shoot rapidly and accurately
You press (or simulate) a pedal to pop in and out of cover
Stages run on tight time limits, pushing aggression over caution
With the GunCon 3, shooting feels sharp and responsive, capturing the spirit of the arcade original. Without it, using an analog stick greatly reduces immersion and can feel sluggish.
Cover system: Pop out to shoot, duck back to reload and avoid damage.
Colour-coded enemies: Indicate threat level and priority.
Boss encounters: Quick reflexes needed as they bombard you with patterns.
Weapon switching: Assault rifle, machine gun, shotgun, and grenades add variety beyond the classic handgun-only formula.
The gameplay is fast, arcade-like, and designed for replayability.
A straight recreation of the arcade game:
Short, intense missions
Light narrative, heavy action
Designed for score-chasing and mastery
Adds:
Longer missions
FPS-style sections with free movement
Additional plot scenes
While ambitious, the FPS segments are the weakest part of the package. They feel dated, clunky, and lack polish compared to dedicated shooters of the PS3 era.
Both arcade and story modes are fully playable solo.
Local co-op for arcade mode is where the game shines pure, chaotic fun reminiscent of the arcade cabinet experience.
Includes shooting galleries and training modes to practice accuracy and reflexes.
The definitive way to play, offering the authentic light-gun feel.
For an early PS3 title, visuals are serviceable but not impressive:
Character models and environments look dated
Animations are stiff
Bright effects and clear enemy silhouettes help gameplay readability
The art style is unmistakably arcade-focused, prioritizing clarity and action over realism.
Menus and UI mimic the flashy, high-contrast look of arcade shooters.
Audio is punchy and energetic:
Classic arcade-style voiceovers (Reload!)
Exaggerated weapon effects
High-tempo soundtrack driving the action
Voice acting is campy and over-the-topperfect for the franchises style, but not meant to be taken seriously.
Time Crisis 4 on PS3 is a fun, nostalgic throwback that successfully brings arcade shooting into the living room. When played with the GunCon 3, its easily one of the most enjoyable light-gun experiences on the console. However, the clunky story mode and mediocre visuals limit its wider appeal, and playing without the proper controller significantly reduces the excitement.
Authentic arcade shooting experience
Excellent with GunCon 3
Fun local co-op
Expanded campaign offers extra content
Fast-paced cover mechanics and varied weapons
Story mode FPS segments are poorly executed
Standard controller aiming feels awkward
Dated graphics
Short arcade mode (though built for replayability)
Recommended if you have the GunCon 3, love arcade shooters, or want a fun co-op experience. Without the light-gun controller, the game loses much of its charm and impact. For fans of classic arcade action, Time Crisis 4 still hits the target just not with perfect accuracy.
