TINUS DE JONGH (1885-1942) CAPE DUTCH FARMSTEAD AND MOUNTAINS VINTAGE WOODEN FRAMED PRINT

A VINTAGE FRAMED PRINT OF ONE OF SOUTH AFRICAS MASTERS OF ART TINUS DE JONGH (1885-1942). THIS PRINT DEPICTS A CLASSIC WESTERN CAPE DUTCH FARMSTEAD WITH MOUNTAINS IN THE BACKGROUNDS FOR WHICH TINUS DE JONGH BECAME SO FAMOUS FOR.

THE BEST-KNOWN TINUS DE JONGH PAINTINGS ARE OF CAPE DUTCH FARMSTEADS AMONGST THE WESTERN CAPE MOUNTAINS. ORIGINAL PAINTINGS BY TINUS DE JONGH REGULARLY SELL FOR MORE THAN R50000. THIS IS OF COURSE BEYOND THE MEANS OF MOST ORDINARY FOLK AND WE WILL HAVE TO BE CONTENT WITH A PRINT. TINUS DE JONGHS CAPE DUTCH FARMSTEAD PRINTS HOWEVER ARE PRIZED FOR THEIR CLASSIC IMPRESSIONNIST DEPICTION OF SOUTH AFRICAN LANDSCAPES.

Tinus de Jongh (1885-1942) was born in 1885 in Amsterdam, Holland. He was not allowed to study art as a young man, and hence he initially worked as a decorator. Two years later, he however started painting Amsterdam street scenes. Self-taught, he then pursued painting full-time. He achieved some note when the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam purchased one of his early pictures. He arrived in South Africa in 1921, practicing a sober style within the Dutch tradition, typified there by Still Life with Birds and Hare.
The light and landscape of South Africa soon caused him to abandon his muted palette in favour of more saturated and brighter colours. His formulaic approach to painting Cape landscapes with gabled farmhouses created such a demand that he abandoned his brushwork in favour of a broader palette knife technique.
In 1938 nearing the end of his life he spent time touring the Koue Bokkeveld and was overwhelmingly impressed by the brilliant colours and harsh light. He dispensed completely with his usual dark palette and began to paint broadly with overall luminous light in a new impressionistic style. S OME OF HIS BEST LANDSCAPE WORK WAS DONE IN THIS SHORT PERIOD OF SCENES IN AND AROUND THE CEDARBERG AREA.
His paintings and etchings sold in the hundreds through his dealer Louis Woolf. In 1934, controversy arose from allegations that Woolf had forged the artists signature on thousands of them. To this day because of Tinus de Jonghs popularity his artwork and signature are regularly forged. A QUICK SEARCH ONLINE WILL REVEAL HOWEVER THAT THE SIGNITURE ON THIS PRINT IS INDEED THAT OF TINUS DE JONGH.
He died on 17 July 1942 from lung cancer. Tinus was the father of Gabriel de Jongh, who in his turn became a famous painter of landscapes in South Africa. The younger de Jongh died in 2004. Following his death in 1942, the value of Tinus de Jongh paintings substantially increased.
