DESCRIPTION | A lovely framed, mounted and glazed Tinus de Jongh etching of CLIFTON ON SEA. CAMPS BAY done in about 1920 but re - produced posthumously (after his death) during the 1940s by his son Gabriel. Gabriel de Jongh wrote the title of the etching as well as the wording 'Original etching by Tinus de Jongh' in pencil in the bottom margin. The etching is mounted on a double mount and framed in the original thin wooden black frame and protected by glass. The complete framed artwork measures 39 x 51 cm and the etching alone measures 18 x 38 cm. You can see the item as sold in the image above and there are 4 more images with detail which follow. If interested, please have a good look at the images and descriptions and ask a question if there is anything you are unsure about. |
CONDITION | This artwork is in very good condition and can be hung and displayed as it is. The frame, mounting and protective glass are original and there is a very slight imperfection in the glass. |
Beautiful artwork done by one of the greatest South African masters. A number of these etchings of South African scenes were produced by Tinus de Jongh and they are extremely popular and collectable. NOTE THAT THE ETCHING SOLD HERE IS A POSTHUMOUS PRODUCTION. THE ORIGINAL COPPER PLATES OF TINUS DE JONGH'S ETCHINGS WERE USED BY THE SON OF THE ARTIST, GABRIEL DE JONGH, TO PRODUCE ETCHINGS AFTER HIS DEATH WHICH WERE INSCRIBED 'ORIGINAL ETCHING BY TINUS DE JONGH'. THIS IS NOT ILLEGAL SINCE THE ETCHING PLATE WAS DONE BY TINUS DE JONGH. THE 'TINUS DE JONGH' WRITTEN UNDER THE ETCHING IS, HOWEVER, NOT AN ORIGINAL SIGNATURE OF TINUS DE JONGH. BE AWARE OF THIS, BECAUSE IT IS A VERY COMMON OCCURRENCE THAT UNSCRUPULOUS PEOPLE ERASE THE WORDING 'ORIGINAL ETCHING BY' AND THEN JUST THE NAME 'TINUS DE JONGH' IS LEFT. THE ETCHING IS THEN SOLD AS A SIGNED TINUS DE JONGH. THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF ETCHINGS PRODUCED FROM THE ORIGINAL PLATES ETCHED BY TINUS DE JONGH: EARLY ETCHINGS WITH ONLY THE TITLE OF THE WORK AND THE ORIGINAL SIGNATURE OF TINUS DE JONGH, LATER ETCHINGS WHICH HAVE THE TITLE, A BLINDSTAMP OF TINUS DE JONGH'S HEAD AND ALSO HIS ORIGINAL SIGNATURE AND THE POSTHUMOUS ETCHINGS BY HIS SON GABRIEL ON WHICH THE NAME 'TINUS DE JONGH' (IN PENCIL) IS NOT AN ORIGINAL SIGNATURE OF THE ARTIST. AFTER THE POSTHUMOUS ETCHINGS WERE PRODUCED BY GABRIEL DE JONGH THE COPPER PLATES WERE TOO WORN TO PRODUCE ANY MORE ETCHINGS AND WERE (I BELIEVE) DESTROYED. THERE IS THUS NO DANGER THAT FURTHER ETCHINGS EXIST BUT PHOTOGRAPHIC REPRODUCTIONS OF ETCHINGS ABOUND.
The artwork on auction here shown without the frame. Detail of the focal point of the etching, showing the lovely fine artwork. The detail written in pencil in the bottom margin (see my 'NOTES' at the top.) The framed etching from behind and shown with a matchbox to give an idea of relative size. It measures 39 x 51 cm. SHIPPING COST: R68 IN SOUTH AFRICA. FOR OTHER COUNTRIES: THE POST OFFICE PARCEL RATE PLUS 20%.
