TINUS DE JONGH
Camps bay and Apostles etching
Martinus Johannes "Tinus" de Jongh (31 January 1885, Amsterdam - 17 July 1942, Bloemfontein) was one of South Africa's most popular painters.
Self-taught, he began his career as a decorator in the Netherlands, and then pursued painting full-time. He achieved some note when the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam purchased one of his early pictures. He arrived in South Africa in 1921, practicing a sober style within the Dutch tradition. The light and landscape of South Africa soon caused him to abandon his muted palette in favour of more saturated colours. His formulaic approach to painting Cape landscapes with gabled farmhouses created such a demand that he abandoned his considered brushwork in favour of a broader palette knife technique. His etchings sold in the hundreds through his dealer Louis Woolf.
He died on 17 July 1942 from lung cancer.

Up for sale is an etching by Tinus de Jongh. It is titled Camps Bay and Apostles and signed by the artists in pencil.
As far as we could determine, this is one of Tinus de Jongh's original etchings and not done by his son Gabriel after his death. If you know more about this etching and have something to add, please do let me know.
The etching is in a good condition and professionally framed. The frame and backing is in excellent shape but there are some yellowing and staining to the frame border.
Total size of the piece including the frame is 52cm x 32cm.
The etching alone measures 39cm x 18cm.
Unfortunately the detail is too much to allow for larger images to be uploaded.
The lighter, yellowish spots in the images below are reflections on the glass, please ignore them.
