Tiny Tina's Wonderlands takes the established Borderlands formula and throws it into a fantasy tabletop adventure. Instead of vaults, planets and corporations, players get castles, dragons, skeletons, magic spells and a chaotic adventure narrated by Tiny Tina.
The result is one of the more entertaining Borderlands spin-offs. The combination of guns, melee weapons, spells and character classes works surprisingly well, while the tabletop-inspired Overworld gives exploration a different feel from the main series. The game doesn't completely escape the repetitive mission structure of Borderlands, but the fantasy setting and excellent character-building systems make Wonderlands a very enjoyable adventure.
The core gameplay remains recognisably Borderlands: explore environments, shoot enormous numbers of enemies, collect increasingly powerful equipment and improve your character.
What makes Wonderlands different is the addition of magic and fantasy weapons.
Guns remain the primary weapon category, but players can also use swords, axes and other melee weapons. Spells replace the traditional grenade system and provide considerably more variety. You can summon meteors, create magical projectiles, freeze enemies, unleash elemental attacks and use other bizarre abilities.
This combination works particularly well because spells have their own cooldowns rather than simply consuming ammunition. Switching between firearms, melee attacks and spells makes combat feel more varied than a conventional Borderlands encounter.
The game also introduces six character classes:
Brr-Zerker
Clawbringer
Graveborn
Spellshot
Spore Warden
Stabbomancer
The most important addition is multiclassing. Later in the campaign, a second class can be added to your character, allowing abilities and skill trees from two different classes to be combined.
This creates some excellent build possibilities.
Strengths
Excellent first-person shooting.
Magic spells add variety to combat.
Melee weapons are useful and satisfying.
Six distinctive classes.
Multiclassing creates excellent build possibilities.
Huge amount of loot.
Character progression is addictive.
Elemental effects work particularly well with the fantasy setting.
Weaknesses
Core Borderlands combat can become repetitive.
Some weapons feel less interesting than others.
Loot management can become tedious.
Certain encounters involve too many enemies without enough variety.
Build experimentation becomes more rewarding later in the game.
The Overworld is one of the game's best additions.
Instead of simply travelling between traditional Borderlands maps, your character moves around a miniature tabletop world. The Overworld contains towns, dungeons, shortcuts, collectibles, random encounters and optional areas.
It gives the game a strong Dungeons & Dragons atmosphere and makes travelling between major locations more interesting.
Random encounters can lead to small combat arenas, while optional activities provide additional experience and rewards.
Once you enter a traditional level, the game returns to the familiar Borderlands formula of large environments filled with enemies, treasure and side quests.
The fantasy environments are generally excellent. Forests, castles, caves, deserts and magical landscapes provide much more visual variety than a straightforward military or science-fiction setting.
The entire adventure takes place within Bunkers & Badasses, Tiny Tina's chaotic tabletop role-playing campaign.
Tiny Tina acts as the Dungeon Master, controlling the world and constantly changing the rules of the adventure. This provides the game's strongest source of humour and allows the developers to parody fantasy RPG conventions.
The main story follows the Fatemaker and their companions as they attempt to defeat the Dragon Lord.
The narrative is deliberately ridiculous, but underneath the jokes there are surprisingly sincere themes concerning friendship, insecurity, grief and accepting change.
Tiny Tina's personality remains deliberately chaotic, while characters such as Valentine and Frette provide a useful counterbalance.
The humour won't appeal to everyone. There are plenty of jokes, references and extended conversations, and the game occasionally pushes its comedic style too far. Nevertheless, the voice cast does an excellent job selling the absurdity.
The campaign provides a good mixture of main missions and optional side quests.
Missions frequently parody familiar fantasy adventures, with quests involving goblins, dragons, undead armies and other fantasy stereotypes.
Some of the side quests are particularly memorable and provide some of the game's funniest moments.
However, the basic structure remains familiar:
Travel fight enemies collect loot listen to dialogue fight a boss repeat.
This means the game can become repetitive during longer sessions.
The campaign is also fairly manageable in length compared with some Borderlands games. That works in its favour because the adventure generally doesn't overstay its welcome.
Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is a successful spin-off that takes the familiar Borderlands formula and gives it enough new ideas to feel worthwhile. The combination of guns, melee weapons and magic is excellent, while the six classes and multiclass system provide considerable freedom when creating a character.
The tabletop Overworld is another major success. It reinforces the Dungeons & Dragons inspiration while providing a refreshing alternative to the conventional world structure of the main series. The excellent voice cast and colourful fantasy environments further strengthen the presentation.
Its biggest problem is that underneath the fantasy setting, this is still very much a Borderlands game. The repetitive missions, enormous amount of loot and constant combat can eventually become tiring.
Nevertheless, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is an entertaining, humorous and highly replayable looter-shooter. It doesn't completely reinvent Borderlands, but it successfully adapts the formula to a fantasy setting and introduces enough new mechanics to make the experience feel fresh.
