The book was compiled in 1988 by Olivier Souchon, a 17-year-old matric pupil from Durban, who had written to South African personalities, asking for the best piece of advice they had been given and by whom.
FW de Klerk, then minister of education, gave advice from his father. "Never attempt to improve your position by harming others: If you want to proceed in life, then perform your present task to the very best of your ability and your career will blossom."
De Klerks boss at the time, PW Botha, had this advice from his parents to impart: "Be disciplined and remain true to yourself and God."
If only he'd heeded what The Arch told Souchon was the most valuable advice he had ever received: "Love thy neighbour as thyself."
Certainly not much of that going on in 1988 South Africa.
