How TiVo works: You purchase the Personal TV Receiver and have access to free schedules on the Internet for all the South African TV channels (Service). The Receiver is compatible with any device with RCA outputs. The Receiver simply connects between your TV set and satellite receiver or video machine.
The Service works by supplying information from the internet to get the up-to-date program schedule information. The data provided works to identify and record shows that you have specifically asked for and other shows that may be of interest to you. In this way, TiVo is always full of programs you'll want to watch whenever you turn on your TV. Everyone loves thier TiVo and always have something great to watch and you can too! The Service is not a must have, as the unit can still record without the schedule data, like a traditional video recorder.
These series 1 Tivo units are great because they are so customizable and therefore are able to work in South Africa. There are all sorts of options to upgrade the Tivo, which uses a standard PC hard drive for storing data, so you can easily upgrade the capacity by installing up to 2 hard drives in the unit. You can even put in a network card which will allow you to connect it to your network, to control it remotely, copy movies and programmes off it, and even stream the shows to other PC’s. A network card also makes it easier to automatically download the TV schedules. Without a network card you can use a serial cable, easily made or purchased, to download TV schedules from the Internet through a PC and upload to the Tivo. The Tivo can even change your channels on a satellite receiver for you, with the Infrared receiver cable, then you don’t need a TV, or satellite remote, Tivo will do it all.
