To a God Unknown is a 1933 novel by American author John Steinbeck, his second published work, about Joseph Wayne, a rancher in California's central valley who establishes a prosperous farm and comes to believe a large tree on the property is the spirit of his dead father. The farm's prosperity is tied to the land, but a brother's fear of Joseph's pagan beliefs leads him to destroy the tree, resulting in famine and disease for the family and the land.
