Release: 2025
Tom Clancys Rainbow Six Siege X represents a major evolution of Ubisoft's long-running tactical shooter rather than a completely separate sequel. Built on the foundation of Rainbow Six Siege, Siege X introduces visual and audio upgrades, additional environmental interactions, improved movement and the new Dual Front 6v6 mode.
The core Siege experience remains centred around careful planning, destruction, gadgets and extremely competitive close-quarters combat. On PS5, the combination of improved presentation, fast loading and high frame-rate options makes the experience particularly well suited to the hardware.
The defining feature of Rainbow Six Siege X remains its tactical gameplay.
Matches are built around 5v5 attack-versus-defence, with attackers attempting to complete objectives while defenders fortify and protect them. Every Operator brings unique gadgets and abilities, meaning team composition can be just as important as individual shooting ability.
Destructible environments remain the game's greatest gameplay mechanic. Walls, floors and ceilings can be breached, reinforced or exploited, allowing players to create unexpected lines of sight and alternative routes.
Siege X expands this concept with additional interactive environmental elements, including fire extinguishers, metal detectors and gas pipes.
The result is a game where players constantly need to consider their surroundings. A seemingly safe room can become dangerous within seconds if an opponent creates a new opening.
Gunplay is precise and responsive, with weapons generally feeling appropriately powerful. Because players can be eliminated quickly, positioning and information gathering are often more important than simply having faster reflexes.
Strengths:
Excellent tactical gameplay
Destruction remains incredibly effective
Large Operator roster
Distinct gadgets and abilities
Precise gunplay
Strong emphasis on teamwork
Multiple ways to approach objectives
New environmental interactions add further tactical possibilities
Weaknesses:
Steep learning curve
Mistakes can be punished extremely quickly
Experienced players have a significant knowledge advantage
Some matches can become frustrating when teamwork breaks down
Large Operator roster can be overwhelming for newcomers
One of Siege X's biggest additions is Dual Front, a permanent 6v6 mode designed to provide a more accessible and dynamic alternative to traditional Siege.
Unlike the standard attack-versus-defence structure, Dual Front combines attackers and defenders on the same team. Players fight to capture enemy sectors while protecting their own, with respawning allowing players to return to the action after being eliminated.
The larger player count and respawn system create a much faster experience than traditional Siege.
Dual Front is particularly useful for players who enjoy Siege's Operators and gadgets but don't necessarily want the intense pressure of a conventional round where a single death removes them from the action.
It doesn't replace the classic Siege experience, but it provides a welcome alternative and makes the overall package more varied.
Maps remain one of Rainbow Six Siege's greatest strengths.
The environments are designed around tactical possibilities rather than simply looking attractive. Rooms, corridors, staircases, windows and destructible surfaces all have potential strategic uses.
Siege X also introduces a major visual modernisation of several maps, with additional maps receiving updates over time.
The environments reward players who learn their layouts. Knowing where reinforcement points are located, where common entry routes lead and which floors can be destroyed can make a substantial difference during a match.
The downside is that this creates an enormous learning requirement. New players can feel completely lost against experienced opponents who know every angle and common tactic.
The extensive Operator roster provides enormous variety.
Attackers and defenders have different abilities, weapons and tactical roles. Some Operators specialise in breaching, others in gathering intelligence, healing teammates, denying access or controlling areas.
This variety encourages players to experiment with different team compositions.
Progression is largely tied to unlocking Operators, customising weapons and earning cosmetic items. The large roster means there is always another character to learn.
The sheer number of Operators can also be intimidating. Understanding how each gadget works, and more importantly how it interacts with other Operators, requires considerable time.
Tom Clancys Rainbow Six Siege X successfully modernises one of the longest-running competitive shooters while preserving the tactical foundation that made Rainbow Six Siege distinctive.
The core 5v5 gameplay remains the star. Destructible environments, specialised Operators, gadgets, precise weapons and information gathering create an experience where intelligence and preparation can be just as important as shooting ability.
Dual Front is a worthwhile addition, providing a faster 6v6 alternative with respawns and a different approach to the Operator system. The visual and audio upgrades also make Siege feel considerably more modern on PS5, while the high-frame-rate option is particularly valuable for competitive play.
Its biggest obstacle remains the learning curve. New players have to understand maps, Operators, gadgets, destruction mechanics and established tactics before they can compete consistently. The game can also become frustrating when communication and teamwork break down.
For players willing to invest the time, however, Siege X offers an exceptionally deep tactical shooter with enormous replay value. It isn't simply a graphical upgrade; it is a substantial evolution of the Siege formula.
