Tomatillo 'Purple Coban' — A tangy twist with a jewel-toned pop!
Add a splash of colour and flavour to your veggie patch with Tomatillo 'Purple Coban' — a stunning, heirloom variety from the highlands of Guatemala. This tomatillo delivers small, plum-like fruits that ripen to a rich purple inside papery husks. The flavour? Tangy, slightly sweet, and perfect for fresh salsas, roasting, or jams. A must-have for adventurous cooks and colourful gardens!

How to Grow:

Sowing Time:
Spring to early summer (September—November)
Start indoors or in trays 6—8 weeks before the last frost.

Germination:
7—14 days at 20—28°C
Sow seeds 0.5 cm deep in seed trays or pots. Keep soil moist and warm.
Transplant after all danger of frost has passed.

Pollination Tip:
You'll need two or more plants for good fruit set — tomatillos aren't self-fertile!

Position:

Full sun — 6—8 hours of direct sun daily
Loves warmth and light, just like tomatoes.

Soil:

Rich, well-drained soil with plenty of compost or organic matter.
pH: 6.0—7.0
Mulch to conserve moisture and keep roots cool.

Watering:

Regular and even — water deeply when topsoil begins to dry out.
Don't let the plants dry out during flowering or fruiting.

Harvest Time:

70—100 days from transplant
Fruits are ready when the husks split or turn papery and begin to dry.
The skin develops a deep purple hue when fully ripe. Can be picked green for tangier flavour.

Height & Spread:

90—120 cm tall
60—90 cm wide
Vigorous, slightly sprawling plants — may need staking or caging for support.

Top Tips:

Plant at least two plants for cross-pollination
Stake or cage plants early to support heavy fruit loads
Harvest when husks begin to dry or split for best flavour
Store harvested fruits in their husks in a cool, dry place
Use for purple salsa, sauces, roasting, or even sweet preserves!

Pollinator Friendly:

Bright yellow flowers are loved by bees and other pollinators — a lively addition to the veggie garden.
