A romantic rags to riches story set mainly in the vibrant tobacco-growing world of post-war Southern Rhodesia. Inspired by a real character.

Tom Catchpole, a 17-year-old Cockney, has always been obsessed with the desire to become rich. On the day on which the first German fuzz-bomb lands on the City of London in July 1944, Tom is out with his sweetheart Kitty Dixon, and is involved in a fight in which his opponent is killed. To avoid arrest, Tom joins the British Army and meets a Rhodesian tobacco farmer, who tells him that fortunes can be made growing tobacco. After many adventures, Tom arrives in Southern Rhodesia and becomes a successful and rich grower ... but constantly searching for Kitty.
