This SA 1976 release by Malawian born folk rocker fuses European and African influences with a unique voice. Released on CBS Records in 1976 this is a much sought after album (his fans are as fanatical as any), catalogue number ASF 1880. Vinyl is in VG+ condition with just a light crackle here and there but plays very well; cover has the usual mid 70`s wear and tear i.e creasing and ring mark but still graded VG+. There is very little on the Internet but here are some reviews of Tony Bird.
"After a too-long absence, Tony Bird performed for the Princeton Folk Music Society this month (Jan. '05) and it was thrilling to hear his unique voice and style again. Whether he is contrasting the incredible beauty of his native Africa with the horrible legacy of its politics or singing his impressions of life in Manhattan, where he has now lived for nearly half of his life, Tony's music and the poetry of his lyrics are still extraordinary. We loved him." -- Justin Kodner
"It was absolutely incredible. Overwhelming. Words fail me. We were sharing our table with other old fans and everyone agreed--an artist who has matured and gotten better (he was already great, so better than great--what would that be?). So often, it seems the flower of creativity fades in mid-life, and performances by people we saw and enjoyed long ago feature their old material. Tony did do some of that material and very well. But he has written extensively while away from the scene, and his new material was astounding. The last number in his second set -- I will never forget. I'm still stunned. ... It was like seeing Bob Dylan in Greenwich Village in the 1960s, Leonard Cohen in Montreal, John Lennon brought back to life ... The deep, reflective, intelligent, poetic, musical, incisive quality of his writing had a profound effect. The audience was really into it, old young, existing fans and those who had no idea who Tony Bird is." - April 2008, Patricia Smith, former organizer of Sudbury, Ontario's Northern Lights Festival
