The Tabla is the most important Indian percussion - it consists of a high pitched treble drum (made of rare resonant tun wood) and a lower pitched drum, the bass dugga, the best quality being made of brass. The tabla is usually tuned to the tonic of the raga by tightening the goatskin leather straps. The heads of tablas made of treated goatskin, also called the puddi, are the most critical part of the tablas. These heads are more complex than any other drum head. The actual playing area of the puddi consists of three separate pieces. These different parts contribute to the tabla's very distinct sounds. Our pro-grade instrument is provided with special quality double gajra leather head this enhances beauty and enriches the sound and the treble resonance that characterizes a fab tabla sound. You will ONLY get this quality in an authentic Bombay tabla set - many other tablas coming out of India for the European and US markets especially from the North of the country are nothing but touristy souvenirs patently lacking the acoustic excellence that goes into a Bombay tabla.
