| DESCRIPTION | The Longpark pottery in Torquay, South Devon, existed from 1883 to 1957. They produced mainly tea and coffee ware with mottos and other wording on them and these items have become very collectable. The mottos are from the tongue of the folk, are often funny and, together with the decoration, the pottery has a very folksy feel and is reminiscent of the German Bauernmallerei. The pottery is dark reddish brown coloured earthenware which is glazed and the wording is then scratched in the glaze before the item is fired. The sugar bowl sold here has the wording 'Be aisy with tha sugar' and shows floral decoration in 6 different colours on a cream background. The footed sugar bowl is quite big and stands 9 cm tall with a top diameter of 11,5 cm. It is shown with a R5 coin in front of it in the main image to give an idea of the relative size. The item is clearly marked underneath as being from the Longpark pottery in Torquay (see image). Have a good look at the images to get an idea of anything not mentioned in this description. |
| CONDITION | The sugar bowl has some faults consisting of chips on the rim and edges of the foot. They are indicated with red arrows on the images which accompany this listing. |
