Ultra-thin is in with Toshiba's new Portégé 2000, which sets a record at just 1.91cm in height. This svelte eye-catcher also comes with a number of cutting-edge features. Business and mobile users who value a light yet capable notebook will probably like the Portégé 2000, despite its moderate performance and limited life on its primary battery.
The first thing you notice about the £1,699 (ex. VAT) Portégé 2000 is its extreme thinness. The front edge is a mere 1.49cm high, expanding slightly to 1.91cm at the back, making it the world's thinnest notebook, according to Toshiba. Given its compact footprint (28.9cm by 22.9cm), the Portégé 2000 is about the same size as your typical spiral notebook. And its basic 1.21kg weight is equally stunning, although that rises to 1.53kg with the second battery (supplied in the price) fitted, and 2.34kg when fully loaded with the external PC Card CD-ROM drive and the AC adapter.
The Portégé 2000's magnesium-alloy chassis with silver and black accents looks cutting edge, but it's even more impressive inside. Toshiba has packed this ultra-thin system with an array of new technologies and high-end features. You get a 750MHz ultra-low-voltage Mobile Pentium III Processor-M; a 1.8in. 20GB hard drive that's 20 percent smaller than any hard drive currently available, according to Toshiba; Windows XP Professional; and 256MB of RAM (expandable to 512MB). The unit also includes integrated 802.11b wireless networking, which is noteworthy, as it's typically not found in notebooks this small. The graphics chipset is the 16MB Trident CyberBlade Video Accelerator XP Ai1.
The Portégé 2000's lithium-polymer primary battery is also a first for Toshiba -- so far, very few other notebooks on the market are using this material. Because they're pliable, lithium-polymer batteries are easier for manufacturers to fit into ever-shrinking portables. However, the primary battery in the Portégé 2000 lasted a disappointingly short 1 hour and 49 minutes in our rundown tests. With the second high-capacity Li-ion battery installed, battery life rose to a most impressive 6 hours and 2 minutes.
Ultra-thin notebooks traditionally deliver only average performance, and the Portégé 2000 is no exception. A Business Winstone 2001 score of 25 isn't going to set the world alight, and nor is a Content Creation Winstone 2002 result of 13.3.
The Portégé 2000 may be tiny, but it still carries a good supply of standard features. Open the lid, and you're greeted by a crisp 12.1in. polysilicon TFT display with a native resolution of 1,024 x 768 pixels (XGA). The full-width keyboard has 84 keys, some of which are located in new positions. For example, in comparison to traditional keyboards, the Delete button is lower and to the right. To mouse around, you use the silver touchpad and its two corresponding buttons. A hard plastic flap in back hides 10/100 Ethernet, 56Kbit/s modem, video-out and two USB ports. You also get one Type II PC Card slot, a Secure Digital media slot plus Fast IR, headphone, microphone and port-replicator connectors. The optional port replicator adds four more USB ports.
