This is an insane 3D gaming notebook for men who want serious performance rather than muted design. It does not care about your girlfriendâÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂs styling preferences. It exists only to hammer as much technology as possible into the body, and then add a couple subtle styling cues, like the red. When something is this fast, it has to be red.
Performance
Firstly, the Toshiba Qosmio X870-F746 has a very serious processor. Quad-core i7-3630QM with turbo-boost up to 3.4Ghz. It comes with 16GB RAM that runs at a blazing 1600Mhz. You can upgrade the RAM to 32GB if you ever manage to find a use for that or if you just have some spare cash lying around. It has 2 x 750GB drives, one of them a hybrid with a 8GB solid-state cache. Blu-ray drive comes standard.
Battery life is not fantastic. Max is 2 hours, which means itâÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂll protect you from power outages and you can work in the dark for a bit, but no wandering off into the forest without a spare battery. YouâÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂll want to stay reasonably close to a power outlet. But asking about its battery life is like asking about the fuel economy of a drag racer. These are not the relevant stats youâÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂre looking for.
17.3â³ Screen, graphics & sound
The Qosmio has a 17.3â³ screen thatâÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂll do 1080p (1,920 x 1,080) natively. Oh, and for good measure itâÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂs 3D-capable, You can also drive an external 3D TV via the HDMI port. The graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670M that has 3GB dedicated to it, but you can feed it another 7GB of the system RAM if thatâÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂs not enough.
It has 2ÃÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ2 Harman Kardon speakers. ThatâÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂs two main speakers and two tweeters, just in case.
It has Windows 8 64-bit so you donâÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂt have to worry about upgrading. No touch screen, which would likely be quite pricy at this size, and you wonâÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂt want fingerprints on your gaming/multimedia workstation.

Conclusion
I wouldnâÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂt buy this and leave it at home. You might come home to find itâÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂs eaten your cat and is sleeping in your bed. This thing is meant to be fed hard work, daily. Games, number crunching, heavy video editing. DonâÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂt give it time to think.
And donâÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂt ask your mother in law what she thinks of your new baby. ToshibaâÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂs Qosmio x870-F746. ItâÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂs not subtle.
