Totems of Uganda, hardcover, 2014, 168 pages, illustrated, condition: as new. A large coffee-table book.
The 168-page book focuses only on the totems of Buganda but the authors promise to write other editions for the rest of the tribes.Running after stones and leaving behind diamonds is the biggest mistake we are taking today in reference to demolition of cultural sites to construct roads and buildings. Those were some of the words from Taga Nuwagaba, the author of The Totems of Uganda; Buganda Edition, at the books launch last month at the Uganda Museum.
Nuwagaba, who together with Nathan Kiwere, started writing the book 15 years ago, was inspired by the need to preserve the African culture and tradition that is quickly fading and being replaced by Western cultures and lifestyles.
The 168-page book focuses only on the totems of Buganda but the authors promise to write other editions for the rest of the tribes.
The Buganda edition
The Buganda edition is well-equipped with detailed description of species, history, information, art work and a collection of full colour illustrations of totems (Miziro) and secondary totems (Bubbiro).
Nuwagaba says the book will teach the youth about their culture and all visitors who come to Uganda.
Our major objective is to conserve, preserve and educate. We want to show the world our Ugandan cultures and that is why we opted to record all totems, he says.
The book has received authentic reviews from various acclaimed personalities, but the most outstanding one is by Bugandas Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II. The authors are proud of the nod and they never hesitated to display it behind the book.
