He moved from his strict Christadelphian upbringing, through the Methodist Church, to become and remain an Anglican. Driven by faith and idealism, enthusiasm and ambition, he applied himself to the teaching of science, and from his early 30s to a continuing struggle against injustice and in support of liberal causes.
