One of the saddest days in the history of Cape Towns transport system was 18th May 1962 when The Cape Times broke the news that the trackless trams were to go. It marked the end of a long tradition of tram and trolley bus - romantic forms of road transport now, like the horse omnibus, extinct in the Western Cape.
The author, in this his first full-length book, traces the development and decline of this colourful era of road transport; and his close association with the South African Library in Cape Town, as a staff member, has provided him with many valuable sources of information which might otherwise have been overlooked. His research has also included material from libraries and archives all over the world.
Here we have a book which makes fascinating reading for enthusiast and historian alike - and for those who remember with nostalgia earlier, less impetuous times. The superb photographs recapture the character of gracious days gone by, but scarce forgotten.
