Hardcover without jacket in very good condition. Very mild age toning. Signed by author as part of a presentation copy to Alfred Porter (Alfred Porter was for many years a well-known amateur actor based in Port Elizabeth. He was also the Chief Librarian at the Port Elizabeth Library.)
"This book is not meant as a biography in the ordinary sense, but as a picture of that vanished South Africa in which I had the privilege of spending my early days. Since I have always enjoyed telling stories - and have been lucky enough to be asked for more by my listeners - I have this time gone all out and talked about many things one normally overlooks - food, drink and daily life in the old-time Backveld. My friend, Eric Rosenthal, who has 'pumped' me and put the story into shape, deserves my particular thanks."
