Brought up in intimate contact with tribal peoples, he had devoted the whole of his adult life to field research amongst them � speaking their languages, befriending kings, tribesmen, psychic practioners and sorcerers alike, recording a rich heritage of little-known ceremonies and rituals, some of them never before witnessed and photographed by white men. He earned the name of Vulindlela � 'Opener of the road'.
