In 1894 a suggestion was made that the Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Natal and Transvaal should adopt stamps in common colours and design to facilitate postal handling. As a result De La Rue submitted colour trials/essays of the 2 1/2 d value. Not all states agreed and the design was accordingly not adopted.
