Transvaal Jade is not a true Jade. It is a green Grossular Garnet. The name comes from the Province in South Africa and the first miners believed they had found true Jade. It is found in Chromium rich ground. The black stripes are pure Chromite. This is a popular rock with Lapidary artists due to the high polish it takes. This rough piece will make a stunning carving or cabochon due to the different colors in the rock. It is very scarce due to the fact the mine is no longer open and we were fortunate enough to buy some old stock.
