The sender of the cover was Surgeon Espine Charles Ward, who had been with the 94th Regiment since they were sent to Zululand following the debacle at Isandhlwana. At the time he wrote this letter, the companies of the 94th formed the garrison at Lydenburg. In November 1880 they were ordered to Pretoria, but en route were ambushed at Bronkhorstspruit. Surgeon Ward suffered a flesh wound in his thigh, and was left by the Boers in charge of the wounded. He remained at the camp he set up on the site for more than three months.
