1st Edition, with 3 maps and 20 b/w plates including a frontispiece view of Cape Town and 17 vignettes. Marbled edges and endpapers. Full leather binding with border tooling in gilt to boards, 3 raised bands to spine and titles and publishing information in maroon leather compartment labels. Bookplate of Maurice Green to front free endpaper. Leather split about 5cm from head at top board, ditto from foot at lower board. Boards scuffed and corners rubbed. Mendelssohn notes that the authors descriptions of the regions around the Orange River and Bechuanaland are recognized as the most important descriptions of those parts of the continent in the early 19th century.
