N(CH2CH2OH)3. It is a tertiary amine and a triol, meaning it has three alcohol groups.

Triethanolamine is used in many products and applications, including:
  • Cosmetics: As an emulsifier, thickener, or wetting agent in shampoos, detergents, and other personal care products 
  • Metalworking: As a corrosion inhibitor in metal-cutting fluids 
  • Rubber and epoxy: As a curing agent for rubber and epoxy polymers 
  • Water treatment: As a coppertriethanolamine complex to control algae in lakes and ponds 
  • Agricultural chemicals: As a neutralizerdispersing agent in herbicide formulations 
  • Pharmaceuticals: As an ointment-emulsifier or pharmaceutical intermediate 
  • Concrete: As a cement grinding aid or concrete admixture 
  • Urethane foam: As a catalyst for urethane foam 
Triethanolamine can cause skin irritation, digestive tract irritation, and allergic skin reactions.
