Trinidad Scorpion Chilli — A tail of terror and tropical heat!
Named for the scorpion-like tip of its fruit, the Trinidad Scorpion is one of the world's hottest chillies — clocking in at 1.2 to 2 million Scoville Heat Units! Originating from Trinidad and Tobago, this fiery fruit brings a brutal sting with a fruity, almost floral flavour underneath. A must-have for chilli enthusiasts, hot sauce makers, and anyone who loves to dance with danger.
Sowing Time:
Spring to midsummer (September—December) — scorpions need heat and a long season to reach full fury. Start indoors early for best results.
Germination:
10—30 days at 26—32°C
Like all super-hots, heat is essential. Use a heat mat or warm, bright location to speed things up.
Sow 0.5 cm deep, keep moist but not soggy, and be patient — germination can be slow.
Transplanting:
Once seedlings have 4—6 true leaves and all risk of frost is past, transplant into rich, warm soil. Harden off first!
Full sun — at least 6—8 hours of strong sunlight daily.
Warm, sheltered spots are best for heavy fruiting.
Well-drained, compost-enriched soil.
pH: Slightly acidic to neutral (6.0—6.8)
Avoid waterlogged conditions — raised beds or large containers work brilliantly.
Moderate — water deeply when topsoil dries out.
Reduce watering once fruit starts ripening to concentrate flavour and heat.
Avoid wetting the leaves to prevent fungal issues.
100—150 days from sowing
Fruits ripen from green to brilliant red or yellow, with a wrinkled, pointed shape and signature "stinger" tip.
Use gloves when harvesting — even touching ripe pods can cause skin irritation!
90—120 cm tall
60—90 cm wide
Sturdy, upright bushes — may need staking when heavy with fruit.
Be patient — super-hots like Scorpions take time to ripen

Feed monthly with a potassium-rich fertiliser
Prune lightly to encourage bushiness and airflow
