The obverse of the medal shows Elizabeth I in ornate lace ruff and gown, date 1591 below. The reverse shows the Arms of Trinity College.
This type of Trinity College prize medal was first struck circa 1850, and was awarded for several subjects: Politics & Literature, Ethics & Logic, Natural Science, History, Literature & Humanities, and Science & Mathematics. Initially a separate die was used for prize medals in each subject, but this practice died out towards the end of the 19th century, subsequent medals having the subject engraved. The date 1591 was the year in which a grant for the erection of Trinity college was conferred by Elizabeth I.
