1948 Registered envelope posted from Tristan da Cunha to Johannesburg with SA adhesives and the 1948 Tristan "Potato Stamp" 1d. All are cancelled with 'Tristan da Cunha' circular cancel. The envelope was carried aboard H.M.S.A.S. 'The Cape of Good Hope' to Cape Town where a registration label was the applied (Registration label could not be applied at the start of the journey in Tristan as there was no Post office there until 1952). 

Also stamped in Cape Town with 'T 4D' circular stamp meaning a Postage Due Tax was applicable to the envelope of 4d which was to be paid by the recipient on receipt in Johannesburg. A vertical pair of the South Africa 2d Postage Due stamps has been applied to the reverse of the envelope paying this tax. Black boxed "POSTED OUT OF COURSE" handstamp on front. An interesting and rare piece of Postal History.
