WHEEL NUTS especially in out of workshop conditions - mainly roadside emergency situations that
necessitate a wheel change to continue the journey.
It is a fact that as heavy Road Haulers wheel nuts are much more tightly fastened (i.e. too much higher
torque specs) than those of light passenger vehicles, removal with conventional wheel tools is often
very difficult for the truck’s operating crew.
The site of a long pipe extension fitted provisionally on to the truck’s cross wheel spanner by the
driver in a desperate attempt to increase the torque applied to the wheel nut by leverage is quite
common. Also truckers trying to loosen nuts by kicking on to the wheel spanner or hitting on to it with
a heavy object to free a “frozen” nut.
The wheel nut wrench is a tool specially designed to deal with difficult to remove wheel nuts. This is
achieved this by the simple physical law of leverage on which all gearboxes, pulleys etc. are based.
The wrench contains a complex gear box that multiplies the torque applied from the input to the
output by about 60 times. Coupled to an extension crank handle the torque multiplication factor from
hand to wheel nut can be many hundreds of times. Once the wheel nut has been loosened and
extreme torque is no longer required, the wrench is removed and the socket attached to the crank
handle through a direct extension supplied with the tool to enable quick removal.
The operating torque of the wrench starts at 4 200 NM and can go up to 6 800NM depending on the
type required - enough to loosen even the most stuck nuts. It is easy to see that by applying excessive
force to the input shaft excessive torque can be applied to the wheel nut stud resulting in damage.
Therefore the use of the wrench for the tightening of wheel nuts is generally not recommended as it is
easy to exceed manufacturers torque specifications. Tightening of wheel nuts by conventional means
is thus recommended.
The wrench comes together with two heavy duty wheel nut sockets in a sturdy heavy duty polymer
plastic box designed especially for on board carry for road haulers, busses, trailers and trucks. Also
moveable cranes, tractors and many agricultural vehicles
The heavy duty wheel nut wrenches facilitate the effortless removal of stuck wheel nuts on trucks,
agricultural tractors, horses, trailers, busses, moveable cranes etc. in situations where tyre removal is
required like roadside tyre changes. This is achieved by means of a geared lug wrench which multiplies
applied forces (torque multiplier).
