Description

The society garlic, Tulbaghia violacea, is a hardy perennial native to the grasslands and rocky slopes of South Africa. It is widely grown as both an ornamental and useful garden plant due to its attractive flowers, drought tolerance, and ability to thrive in a variety of conditions.

This species forms dense clumps of narrow, strap-like grey-green leaves that release a garlic-like scent when crushed. During the warmer months, it produces slender flower stalks topped with clusters of star-shaped lilac to violet flowers. These blooms are long-lasting and attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, adding colour and activity to the garden over an extended flowering season.

Tulbaghia violacea is valued not only for its ornamental qualities but also for its resilience and versatility. It is commonly used in borders, rock gardens, and mass plantings, where its clump-forming habit creates neat drifts of foliage and flowers. The plant is also known for its tolerance of drought and poor soils once established.

Growing Tulbaghia violacea is very straightforward. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil, although it can adapt to a range of soil types. Regular watering encourages more vigorous growth and flowering, but established plants are quite drought-tolerant. It can tolerate light frost and recovers well after cold periods. With minimal care, it forms a long-lived, low-maintenance perennial suited to a wide range of garden settings.

Plant into a 15cm to 20cm pot and water in well. Extremely tough and won't mind being placed directly into harsh sun as long as you keep it watered. Grows like a weed
