If you want stage 2 / 3, you  should configure the engine for stage 2 and 3 , otherwise higher than stage 1 damages the engine. Some diesel engine does not need to configure the engine for stage 2 and 3, some petrol engine need to configure engine for stage 2 and 3 if you want more performance.
