Published in 1972 by Allen Lane The Penguin Press. Dust jacket slightly folded, torn and spotted at edges, but it did an excellent job protecting the linen hard cover, which is spotless. Inside pages pristine and the binding solid. Black and white photographs on nearly every page. Plus an index.
Just the book for art lovers, especially the Turner fanatics. It discusses Turner’s masterpiece Rain, Steam and Speed in detail: the circumstances in which it was conceived and created, what the artist hoped to achieve, the means he employed, and his technique and handling of the medium. The painting aroused little comment when it was first exhibited, except from Thackeray, who said it was "composed of dabs of dirty putty slapped on to the canvas with a trowel ..." Today this masterpiece is one of the treasures of the National Gallery in London.
