TURNIP CULTIVAR: Early Purple Top
PLANTING SEASON: Cool season crop. Mid to late Summer, and Autumn most desirable. Otherwise, all months, June least favourable month for planting.
DAYS TO HARVEST: 50
GERMINATION: 4 - 7
CULTIVATION: The turnips need soil that was well manured for the previous crop. Sow seed where it is to be grown. Rake the soil until it resembles fine crumbs. Sow seed in shallow drills, rows 25 cm apart. Cover with 1 cm of fine soil, firm down and water gently with fine mist. Keep reasonably well watered throughout growing season. Keep weeds out of turnip bed. Thin out at 2 weeks, and again at 4-5 weeks. Use the thinned out leaves as spinach. Final spacing should be about 20 cm apart.
SOWING DEPTH: 1 cm
FINAL SPACING: 20 cm in rows, 40 cm between rows
Our turnips start life out in our seed trays (See our Plastic Seedling Trays). They were planted out once they had their first 3-4 true leaves, and seedlings were large enough to handle with ease. We planted them in well dug loam, heavily mulched with grass clippings in May. They have grown through heavy frost all winter. We have been enjoying them as an excellent ingredient for winter soups. Fry finely grated turnips with onions, when preparing your next soup, stew or cottage pies!
Don't pay for fancy packaging! We have great seeds at an affordable price!
