About this Item
In a contemporary full blue leather binding with decorated gilt panels and five raised bands with gilt, and a red and gilt title label. This is not a later binding and is fully preserved. Gilt borders on front and rear leather boards. The fore edge shows signs of original marbling. Maroon and light blue marbled endpapers, of which one of the four (at the rear ) is in a skilled facsimile. Front original marbled endpaper has a crease at the corner. Text and all 112 illustrations complete as is frontispiece. Some leaves show light foxing, as is normal. Original title page . The half title page with the correct title " Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas" in the correct script ( ie exactly the same script as that on the title page ), and the words "Printed by Ballantyne and Company/ Edinburgh and London" on the reverse, appears to be a later completely correct facsimile, although highly skilled. Both front and rear interior hinges have been strengthened by later maroon matching book cloth strips. A very pleasing first edition with the original luxury full blue and gilt leather binding.
