ON AUCTION IS ARE TWO ANTIQUE LEATHER AND BONE HANDLED HUNTING CROPS. BOTH HAVE BRAIDED LEATHER SHAFTS AND CARVED AND DECORATED BONE HANDLES. BOTH OF THE THONGS OR LASHES ARE MISSING BUT THIS CAN BE REMEDIED BY AN ENTERPRISING BUYER. THE ONE SILVER NON MAGNETIC METAL COLLAR IS ENGRAVED GLORIA KERSCHOT.
 
These antique leather whips feature distinctive bone handles, likely from an animals leg bone or stag horn. The handles are capped with a non magnetic silver metallic bands and shows signs of wear consistent with age and use. Leather shows age related wear. The whips overall construction suggests they were used as a hunting crops.
 
HUNTING WHIPS HAVE A HOOKED HORN HANDLE, A SHORT SHAFT OR STOCK AND CAN HAVE A LONG LEATHER THONG WITH A SILK OR CORD LASH. WITHOUT A THONG IT CAN BE CALLED A HUNTING CROP.
 
THE WHIP HANDLE IS USED FOR OPENING GATES. THE HANDLE OF THE WHIP OR CROP IS USUALLY STAGHORN.
 
The shaft or stock of the whip was traditionally made of cane or whalebone or a combination of the two, later whips were "Steel lined", which meant that they were more difficult to break. THE SHAFT USUALLY WAS COVERED IN PLAIN OR BRAIDED LEATHER - COVERED STOCKS ARE EASIER TO GRIP IN WET WEATHER.  
 
THE THONG OR LASH IS USED TO PREVENT HOUNDS COMING TOO CLOSE TO YOUR HORSE'S FEET, IT CAN ALSO BE WRAPPED AROUND ONE'S HAND OR WRIST WHEN OPENING GATES SO THAT THE WHIP CANNOT BE DROPPED. WHEN THE WHIP IS "CRACKED" IT IS THE END OF THE THONG BREAKING THE SOUND BARRIER THAT WE HEAR.
