TOURMALINE IS THE MOST COLORFUL MINERAL KNOWN, OCCURRING IN ALMOST EVERY COLOR OF THE RAINBOW. In fact Tourmaline is also known as the rainbow gemstone and has a legend that states that it passed through the rainbow on its way to earth, and thats what gives it all its colors. HOWEVER MOST COLOURS OF TOURMALINE ARE RARE THOUGH SINCE SCHORL OR BLACK TOURMALINE MAKES UP ABOUT 90% OF ALL TOURMALINE FOUND ON THE EARTH. Up until the 1800s, the Tourmaline was not recognized as its own stone. Instead, it was often categorized with other stones such as emeralds. Deep green gem tourmalines mined in Brazil are still referred to by some as Brazilian emeralds, though it is known that they are tourmalines.

TOURMALINE: Tourmaline is not a single mineral. In fact, it is a group of minerals with inter-related physical and chemical properties. Tourmaline is a complex boron silicate mineral composed of aluminum, iron, magnesium, lithium, and potassium. Each tourmaline stone has the same crystal structure. Yet, the elements inside it may be different. Tourmalines measure 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness. This means that it is quite hard and resistant to scratches. Brazil has been the world's leading source of tourmaline for nearly 500 years. In the 1500s Portuguese explorers obtained green and blue tourmaline from indigenous people. They thought that these colorful stones were emeralds and sapphires and sent them back to Portugal. Today, discoveries of tourmaline of various kinds have been made in African countries like Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Tanzania.
