TWO BEAUTIFUL LILAC PINKISH CHERT AND SHALE ROCK SAMPLES SMOOTH WAXY TO THE TOUCH!
TWO BEAUTIFULL CHERT AND SHALE ROCK SAMPLES. LILAC PINKISH IN COLOUR. ITS PRIMARY CHARACTERISTIC A SMOOTH WAXY FEEL WHEN YOU TOUCH IT CANNOT BE SEEN THOUGH. ITS IS A SEDIMENTARY ROCK YOU CAN SEE SOME LARGER QUARTZ PEBBLES IMBEDDED IN IT. IT IS A BEAUTIFUL ROCK SPECIMEN. SEDIMENTARY ROCK Sedimentary rocks are formed from particles of sand, shells, pebbles, and other fragments of material. Together, all these particles are called sediment. Gradually, the sediment accumulates in layers and over a long period of time hardens into rock. Generally, sedimentary rock is fairly soft and may break apart or crumble easily. You can often see sand, pebbles, or stones in the rock, and it is usually the only type that contains fossils.
CHERT: Chert is a hard, fine-grained sedimentary rock composed of microcrystalline quartz. Chert is characterised by a waxy feel and luster and a smooth sedimentarytexture. It is not soft though and has a hardness of 7 on the Moths Scale. SHALE: Shale rocks are those that are made of clay-sized particles and are have a laminated appearance. They are a type of sedimentary rock. Shale is the abundant rock found on Earth. They are usually found in areas where gentle waters have deposited sediments that become compacted together. Shale may be any color, but is generally greenish gray to grayish black. Shales that are deposited in oxygen-rich environments often contain tiny particles of iron oxide or iron hydroxide minerals and just a few percent of these minerals distributed through the rock can produce the red, brown, or yellow colors exhibited by many types of shale. It is relatively soft and has a smooth, greasy feel when freshly exposed, but is hard and brittle when dry. Most shales split into thin plates or sheets and are termed fissile, but others are massive (nonfissile) and break into irregular blocks.
