Two Canadian 1902 5 Cent St Edwards Crown Error Coins and Six 10 Cent (1896 1910 1928 1928 1931 1938) Coins Total Fine Silver Weight 13.86g

ON AUCTION IS A WONDERFUL COLLECTION OF CANADIAN SILVER COINS.

TWO 5C COINS BOTH DATED 1902. (KING EDWARD VII) SILVER PURITY .925. WEIGHT 1.16g.

The 1902 Canadian 5-cent coins, featuring King Edward VII is a notable piece of Canadian numismatic history. It was the first 5-cent coin issued with his portrait, replacing the Victorian design. These coins are known for being initially struck with the outdated St Edwards Crown (not King Edwards chosen crown) on the back or reverse which led to public confusion and hoarding.

While not exceptionally rare, the 1902 5-cent coin is a popular and significant piece for collectors, especially those interested in early Canadian coinage.

A 10C COIN OF 1896. (QUEEN VICTORIA) SILVER PURITY .925. WEIGHT 2.32g.

A 10C COIN OF 1910. (KING EDWARD VII) SILVER PURITY .925. WEIGHT 2.32g.

TOTAL 0.925 SILVER WEIGHT = 6.96G = 6.44G FINE SILVER

NOTE ON THIS WEEKS CRAZY WED AUCTION I WILL HAVE SOME INTERESTING COINS OF SOUTHERN AND EAST AFRICAN BRITISH COLONIES OF THE PAST.

CANADIAN COINS:
The first coins of the Dominion of Canada, issued in 1870, were silver 5-, 10-, 25- and 50-cent pieces. Bronze cents were added in 1876. All coins bore on the obverse the head of Queen Victoria. Silver coins bore the value and date in a crowned maple wreath on the reverse; the cent bore the value and date in a circle enclosed by a continuous maple vine. These coins were variously issued until 1901.
These Canadian coins illustrated the icon of the queen wearing a tiara crown with a bun hair tied with ribbon. Once and for all, it became the myth of Canada, as well as with Queen Victoria Dei Gratia Regina which means Grace of God. Then in 1901, Canada was permitted to have its own minted coin under Act of Ottawa Mint.
In the year, 1902, coins illustrating the portrayal of King Edward VII were released for Canadian currency. King Edward VII was the ruler of the British Dominions and United Kingdom starting January 22, 1901 until May 6, 1910.
MOST OF THE EXPERTS ARE MOSTLY INTERESTED WITH THE 5 CENTS COIN IN 1902 AS IT ILLUSTRATES THE ST. EDWARDS CROWN ON ITS REVERSE. IT ALSO BELIEVED TO BE ERROR COINS THAT THEY HAD TO BE COLLECTED UPON ITS RELEASE. THE DESIGN WAS CUSTOMIZED CONSEQUENTLY IN THE SUCCEEDING YEAR.

TUDOR CROWN VS ST EDWARDS CROWN
Over the centuries, various British monarchs have chosen different crowns to represent them in symbolic form.
Most often, we see this as part of the Royal Cypher- basically the monarchs logo. The one we've known best for many years is E II R Elizabeth the Second Regina.
IN 1902 FOR HIS CORONATION, KING EDWARD VII DECIDED TO STANDARDISE THIS AND CHOSE HENRY VIIIS TUDOR CROWN AS HIS SYMBOL.
The crown it was based on was created for King Henry VIII at the start of his reign, and remained in the Crown Jewels collection until Oliver Cromwell had most of them broken up and sold in 1649.
This design was kept for his son, King George V, and then Georges sons King Edward VIII and King George VI.
In 1953, the newly-reigning Queen Elizabeth II decided she wanted a change. So, she decided that her cypher would bear St Edwards Crown- the crown traditionally used to crown the monarch at the Coronation.
Since then, it became a massive icon of the British monarchy and easily identifiable. It can be seen on telephone booths and postboxes up and down the country.
When he became King, Charles III chose to revert to using the Tudor Crown for his cypher.
