CLOISONNE: CLOISONNÉ IS AN ANCIENT TECHNIQUE FOR DECORATING (USUALLY ENAMEL PAINTED) METALWORK OBJECTS WITH COLORED PAINTED MATERIAL. Metalwork has been decorated using the cloisonne technique for centuries in Asia. Objects of many kinds, such as vases, plates, bowls and pendants for jewelry, as well as great religious and secular art works, have been decorated using the cloisonne process. THE CLOISONNE DECORATING PROCESS BEGINS WITH A METAL OBJECT, USUALLY MADE OF BRASS OR COPPER AND THE SURFACE IS COVERED WITH ENCLOSURES OR COMPARTMENTS (CALLED CLOISONS IN FRENCH) TO HOLD THE ENAMEL INLAYS. The cloison surrounds or enclosures consist of small brass wires. Then colored enamels fill the compartments according to the design and are fired to melt and solidify each layer of enamel in place. These enamels are not the shiny paints we roll on walls and cabinets in kitchens and elsewhere; instead, they consist of ground colored glass that melts only at very high temperatures. When heated, a drop of the glass powder flows to fill a specific tiny compartment.
