HERE ARE TWO STRIKING ONYX STONE CARVED ASHTRAYS FROM THE 1970'S. THE ONE IS SHAPED LIKE A TURLE. IT IS HAND CARVED OUT OF NATURAL YELLOW BROWN ONYX STONE.

CONDITION: SOME SURFACE RUST TO METAL RIM OF THE ONE ASHTRAY. ONYX STONE IN BEAUTIFUL CONDITION.

Onyx is a type of marble and it has many of the same properties. The difference is the stunning patterns and veining in each slab. 
Onyx is mostly made of calcite and is formed in caves in several areas around the world, mostly in the Middle East, North Africa, and South America. When water drips from stalactites and stalagmites and then evaporates, it leaves behind deposits of calcium carbonate and other minerals, causing the stones colorful bands, swirls, and spots.
Another somewhat unusual property of onyx is its translucency, meaning that light can penetrate it. When lit for behind or underneath, this creates a soft glow that further highlights the color and pattern variations in the stone, adding dimension to the piece. Onyx is one of the very few stones which allows light through, creating a truly majestic aura.
