These two beautiful antique 19th Century chromolithograph engravings show the age of a horse by its teeth. These prints are actual plates from a rare British natural history book printed in 1881. The prints are in great condition and have no printing on the reverse side. The plates are suitable for framing and are much sharper than the scans shows. The paper size is 30.0 cm (11.8) wide and 24,5 cm (9.6) high. They are printed chromolitho on wove paper in colour.
The scans below shows more detail of the teeth, and one can see the artistry in these prints. These plate, in colour, come from the book - Modern Practical Farriery - by Miles, W.J. & Lupton, J.I. with engravings by Benjamin Herring. Published by William Mackenzie, London, Glasgow and Edinburgh originally published c.1870. This copy of the book was printed about 1882, as it lists the winners of the major English horse races up to 1881. This book has over 500 pages, with wonderful illustrations in 14 plates, Portraits of Horses in colour and black on white, of which this listing is one of the colour prints produced by lithography. CONDITION: The condition is EXCELLENT since they have NEVER BEEN FRAMED, nor exposed to damaging ultra violet rays of the sun. These prints have been stored flat and protected from damage and moisture for the past 120 years. As usual for plates of this age, there are some very minor blemishes, which does not affect the image. There is no foxing, and neither are there any creases. The paper is not pure white and has discolored with age, but this is normal. These are authentic 100+ year old antique items and are not a copies.
The picture above is the inside title page of the book. This is what a reference book said about the artist, Ben Herring jnr - "Ben Herring Jnr.... was an accomplished artist. As well as supplying portraits of race horses and pictures of racing to a number of periodicals and for books, aquatint plates after his work were published by J. and later G.P. McQueen. These 'composite' scenes of racing provide a valuable and accurate portrayal of the leading horses and jockeys of the years between 1860 and 1875" (Charles Lane British Racing Prints p. 121).
Postage and packaging will be at cost to the successful bidder. The prints will be parceled between two polystyrene boards for safe and secure arrival.
