The desktop image allows you to try Ubuntu without changing your computer at all, and at your option to install it permanently later from the same disk. This type of image is what most people will want to use. You will need at least 384MB of RAM to install from this image.

New Features

Smaller Unity Launcher

You can adjust the size of the Unity Launcher through the slider present in the System Settings > Appearance pane. Until this release, the minimum size was fixed and could only go so far and you weren’t able to make the Launcher really small.

In Trusty Tahir the Unity Launcher can be resized to a minuscule 16px wide, down from the default setting of 48px wide.

Raise Volume Past 100%

If your laptop speakers are rubbish or the media you’re trying to listen to is insanely quiet, there are often times when pumping the volume up past 100% is needed. Without the need for hacks or extra apps, Trusty ships with user-facing for increasing the system volume past the 100% level.

Locally Integrated Menus

Most people are going to be happy with Ubuntu 14.04; the often requested option to show application menus in applications windows has finally been implemented .

To maintain the justification for removing them in the first place (i.e., space) the LIM appears embedded in the window title bar, and not, classically, as a separate menu bar beneath it. This may sound like it will get in the way of moving and adjusting windows, but some clever interaction heuristics mean it’s surprisingly swish in use.

Full Menus

A glut of Ubuntu’s default GNOME applications, including Nautilus and Rhythmbox, have had standard menus reinstated.
