Features approximately fifty posters for films produced or distributed by Universumfilm Aktien Gesellschaft (Ufa), the German film studio founded in 1918.
First edition, A very good condition softcover, 144 pages with almost 100 colour plates of the posters and many photographs.
Basically a catalogue with historical commentary for a 1999 museum exhibit of vintage German film posters.
Until someone (Taschen, please!) publishes a proper coffee table book of early German film posters, this is the best collection I know. Over 50 full-page, color reproductions of classic posters, including many of the masterpieces of the Weimar era, posters largely unfamiliar to Americans, even when the films are famous. This is the catalog for a museum exhibit, and the presentation is attractive. Accompanying text is sparse but well done, and includes short articles on publicity of the era, the history of Ufa, and other topics. The poster reproductions are vivid and, all in all, the book serves as a fine capsule history of film in one of the hot spots of 20th Century history.
